Check it out...Here's a unique set of 4 (FOUR!) different handwritten letters written in May 1946 just after the close of World War II from a soldier stationed at Sangley Point 8 Miles Southwest of Manila in the Philippines. One of the Letters Mentions a Visit to the Philippines by Pres. Harry Truman The Letters Were Written by a Sailor in the U.S. Navy Named John J Hess II and sent back home to a girl named Eleanor Metz at 450 King St. in Pottstown Pennsylvania. Each multipage letter is handwritten on colorful paper (7 1/4" wide by 10 1/2" tall) and each page features the logo/emblem of the United States Navy Eagle at top. Each letter comes with its original mailing envelope. The first letter is dated May 8, 1946. It reads: "Sangley Point dear Eleanor, I am now stationed at an air base near Manila. I flew out on the Mars and we stopped to refuel and rest at Hawaii. I went to see Woo and he gave me your address. I was going to write to you before this but lost the letter woo had sent to me while I was still in the states, and your address with it. I am working in the office here and right now there isn't much to do. We got one plane in a week and it stays here for two days and they mechanics give it a check. When no planes are in, life is easy for them, but the office keeps going all the time. It is hot and Sandy here all of the time. Last night it rained for the first time since I've been here. The rainy season will start soon and then I'll complain about that. When I think back on the time you last saw me, I guess I seemed silly to you. I assure you that I wasn't at my best then. I don't know very much about you, and would appreciate it if you answered this note with a nice long letter, telling me all about you. Even the luckymen in your life. The officer wants me to do something now, so I'll have to close. Your friend, Jack PS enclosed is a form which I would appreciate if you filled out and returned. Mostly it is a joke, but I would like your picture. Jack. Jack" the next letter is dated May 26, 1946. It reads: "dear Archie – I received your letter last night, also the form. I was very glad to hear from you so soon. Mail has just started coming out to me and I have been here one month already. I just came in from a boat ride. We went on one of the big wrecked chap tankers that was just raised. It is a wreck all the way through. I can see why you thought I didn't like you, but that was only bashful miss on my part. I never dislike someone until I know them fairly well. Since I have been in the Navy I have become less bashful but still not a wolf. That form I sent to you was given to me by woo. I made several copies of it. I really do want a picture of you so be sure and enclose one next time. I am anxious to learn where you ever got that nickname. I'm sure that will be a tale to hear. I Have Been into cavite (?) Once on liberty and I assure you there isn't very much to do there. Drinking is just about all I can see to do. I am not a drunkard but I like to drink beer. Those boys in Pottstown must be funny if they try to boss a girl around. I never do that and I don't ever expect to, until I get married. Then it will be different. Manila is a very large city and I've been there four times on business. It looks very modern except the buildings have no insides and some no walls. They are building a reviewing stand for Truman when he comes out here to turn these islands loose. I hope to be off then and get a chance to see that ceremony. Woo should be home soon and I expect to be discharged around the end of August. I will start college soon after I get home but I will have a fling before that. Hope I can count you in on that for a night or two. I am answering your letter very soon after getting it, and I hope that you do the same. The time it takes for letters to get there and back is long enough with this getting pushed back. Your friend Jack" The next letter is dated May 30, 1946 it reads: "Sangley dear Archie, I received your pictures yesterday and I thank you. They are pretty good and I have them in front of me now. I didn't see you enough to have a clear picture in my mind but those photos will help until I can see you again. Today is a holiday here even more so than in the states. They are using today as a memorial day for the men that died defending and invading the Philippines. I can't think of much to say since I have just written to you. Hoping to hear from you soon. Your friend, Jack" and the last letter is dated July 12, 1946 and reads: "Sangley dear Archie, I received your letter just yesterday, after thinking you weren't going to answer. Today is a very slack day but tomorrow another plane comes in. Always on Saturday so we have to work all Saturday night. The days matter very little bow, but I just don't like the idea of it. We have a new officer in charge and the papers changing them kept me busy for a while. All the civilians were fired and that makes more work. I prefer to do all this work in the office myself then I know where things are put in what's to be done. I was in Manila on 4 July but didn't get there until the afternoon. All the ceremonies were in the morning but the town was packed. The fleet was in and drunks all over. We had a beer party the other day on the beach. Everybody had a good time. I spent most of the afternoon in the water and limited myself to six beers. Woo certainly is getting a raw deal. I don't write tan because he always tells me he is leaving. I will be home in a couple months. I should leave here next week and be discharged before 15 August. I am not coming east right away if it is possible for me to get discharged at Alameda. I want to buy some things in Frisco and also spent several days in Pittsburgh with three buddies on my way home. My parents have gotten me into college and I want to have some fun before I settle down to study. Maybe woo and I can come over to Pottstown on a double date when we both get back. I hope you will agree. I hope your throat is better by the time you receive it. Love Jack"-Letters are in lightly used condition with usual wear expected from age and normal use and the envelopes show usual edge wear as expected- Still a very cool one-of-a-kind soldier letter set from World War II- A real piece of history here- Postage information is listed at the bottom-$ 5.95 postage is required.World War II Era Pottstown Pennsylvania 4-FOUR soldier letter set-Harry Truman!

Terms of Sale
I try and place a penny in every photo to help judge the size of the item, obviously it is there for size comparison and is not included with the item. The standard sized Lincoln head penny in the photograph is there for size comparison ONLY and is not included in the package. We're just trying to help you figure out how big the item is. We try and always be as accurate as we can in the item
description and will gladly answer any question about item size & description when needed. Please e-mail us with any questions BEFORE the end of sale and BEFORE placing a bid. Postage is determined by the U.S. Postal service and is never refundable. Many of the items are VINTAGE and although they are in very fine condition, they may not function as well as when they were made decades ago. So if you intend on using the old item, please be aware that we are selling it for collector value only. In other words, if you intend on using a 50+ year old letter opener and it breaks, don't get mad at us. It may be hard to believe, but we have received a couple negatives because people broke vintage items while trying to use them.
