    Description

Up for sale tonight are a small group of RARE ORIGINAL Vietnam War era and later USAF patches that belonged to Brig. General Charles “Pete” Winters, the one time Vice Commander and Commander of Area 51.  I acquired these items directly from Gen. Winters.
As can be seen in his attached bio, he trained in F-100 Super Sabers in the early 1960s which is where this patch came from.  During Vietnam, he flew the F-100 out of Phan Rang AFB in Vietnam and then became a test pilot. From 1979-1981, he served as the Vice Commander of the AF Flight Test Center (AFFTC), Detachment 3, in Nevada (AKA “Area 51”) and then served as the Commander of Area 51 from 1981-1983.   As can be seen in his bio, he was later promoted to a Brig. General.
This flag was flown on this first USAF flight
of the F-117 on October 15, 1982 (see final picture).  It was then framed and
presented to then Col Winters as a commemoration of this first USAF flight. Since the F-117 stealth program was highly classified, all it says is “A MEMENTO OF A SIGNIFICANT EVENT” and gives the date. The framed flag is still in very good condition with some light staining coming through the flag where it was adhered to the backing.  The frame measures 26”x20” while the flag measures 17.5”x11”.
