e we offer an enormous (11.75 x 16.25-inch) ledger-sized, compilation of the actual original Harper's Weekly magazines from the entire year of 1861--the crucial year of Lincoln's inauguration and the onset of the US Civil War, featuring engravings by Winslow Homer. This is not one of the common vintage reprints available, but a rare binding of the original 1861 issues, complete from the January 5
th issue through December 28th--
832 pages in all. From New Years' toasts, to threats of secession, to the double-page spread engraving of Lincoln being sworn in, to the bombardment of Fort Sumter, to the mustering of volunteers and street battles in Baltimore, to Bull Run, and proceeding through battles, popular culture, political cartoons featuring Lincoln, and issues, advertisements, and all along, very densely illustrated with gorgeous spreads of engravings on paper of such high quality that 150 years later they look fresh.  I could have uploaded pictures all day. (When viewing these small images, please keep in mind most of them are enormous in reality, ledger size, and though a few images are a bit out of focus in areas, the print and engravings are actually very clear and crisp.)
The book features numerous engravings by Winslow Homer, including the inaugural procession, a slave auction, a portrait of Gen. Beauregard, among numerous others.
This is a wonderful, priceless history lesson that walks you from the inauguration through the end of 1861, one week at a time.
Also included in your purchase is a 10 x 14-inch laminated reprint of the "Map of the Southern States," that appears in the the November 9 issue, from pages 708-718.  The map was usually removed from the issue that week and is rarely included in compilations, but this one remains. The page has been repaired at the fold with
ph-neutral
binder's tissue, so that it can still fold open if handled carefully. I've protected the entire section of pages in a rice paper border so to protect against further wear. Having the laminated reprint is helpful as an easy reference to battle positions and in assessing road, railroad access and such, and in deciding which of the 4 maps to refer to.
You will see these rarely on Ebay, in pieces, mildewed, falling apart, with scores of pages removed to be used as framed prints.  This copy is in excellent condition, complete, and has been recently rebound with the original spine cloth remnants applied atop new spine cloth, new hinges, and three placeholding ribbons.  There are a few small edge tears that have been repaired with binder's tissue. There is no mildew staining, the pulp remains durable, and nothing has been removed.  The pages are clean, bright, and in excellent condition.
