    Description

This is an extraordinary piece, in my view.  Old Sheffield Plate (see picture of edge showing interior copper.  Old Sheffield Plate developed in Sheffield, England, made before techniques such as electroplating were invented.  A sheet of copper was sandwiched between two sheets of silver, to make a strong, less expensive ware, the outside of which was silver.  In this one, the owner's coat of arms is inserted in fine silver on both sides of the meat dome.  Note the difference in the color of the silver on the coat of arms inserts.   The coat of arms inserts are finely engraved.  The only mark I find is pictured, on the inside top of the dome next to the nuts holding the silverplate handle.
The mark was used by Roberts Cadman & Co beginning around 1785, Roberts Smith & Co 1844-1848, Smith Sissons & Co 1848-1858, and William & George Sissons Co from 1858-1891.
This is large dome. (20" x 14.5" x12" tall.)  Approximately 10 pounds.  Neta had this in her antiques store until she took it home.  She acquired it an a high end Sarasota antiques show in 1996.
